北海公園原是遼、金、元、明、清歷代封建帝王的“禦花園”。總面積共有68.2公頃。公園的中心—瓊島，周長1913米，高32.8米，是1179年金代)用挖海的泥土堆成的。島上白塔建於1651年，塔高35.9米。

瓊島東北部有“瓊島春陰”碑，為1751年建立，附近風光秀麗，過去是燕京八景之一。海北岸有“五龍亭”，建於1602年，是封建皇帝釣魚和看焰火的地方；“九龍壁”，建於1756年，全壁用五彩琉璃瓦砌成，兩面各有蟠龍九條，姿態生動，反映瞭我國勞動人民的創造才能；“鐵影壁”，是元代文物。
